Movie Review - GET OUT

From IMDb and pretty much the best synopsis of the movie without giving too much of it away: A young African-American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend's mysterious family estate. This movie first made me think of a lot of other movies I have seen, like STEPFORD WIVES and more recently A CURE FOR WELLNESS, so I wondered if it would be any good, and it surprised me.

Now there aren't a lot of new horror movies out that are any good, but lately I have seen a few that not only look promising but were. SPLIT was a great movie, although not necessarily a horror movie. A movie to soon be released titled THE BELKO EXPERIMENT looks fantastic, although in the line of THE PURGE series, it looks like a different take on people stuck in a cycle that only has one way out. It seems similar to the CUBE series, which if you haven't seen I highly recommend. The endings are not satisfying, but the premise behind them is fantastic, although once you see the first one the rest will kind of seem similar.

Back to GET OUT. A young African-American man travels to a notoriously white upscale neighborhood to visit his girlfriend's family for the first time. The young man, Chris, has only been dating his girlfriend, Rose, for about four months, and they arrive just in time for an annual party in honor of her grandparents. Things get a little creepy when Chris finds his cell phone continually unplugged, and eventually dead. The group of affluent people do act like they have not seen a person of color before, commenting on Chris' body shape and his sexual prowess, as well as his size. Eventually a sinister element is introduced and the audience sees what is really going on. The ending of this movie was awesome, and it attempted to break the stereotypes of African-Americans in horror movies (they get killed first, they walk right into the arms of death, they die brutal and horrifying deaths).

I really enjoyed this movie. I felt that it was a little slow while it built up the suspense and tried making the audience wonder what was happening. I felt that there were times when the darkness was a little too obvious and overbearing, but overall it was not a bad representation of a bad part of town. I would have liked it to be a little less STEPFORD WIVES, and at a certain part there (where a young man is introduced but later not saved) could have been a little more explanation. The plot device could have used a little bit more explanation as well.

I will say that this movie was very enjoyable, and the ending was a fabulous ending, very satisfying. While some may actually see it coming, it was still great.

I recommend this movie to everyone, it had humor, horror, and suspense. Plus, and I'll be honest here, in today's political climate, it really made one think.
