Book Review - ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE

4/22/2019

When I bought Anna and the Apocalypse I didn't realize it was the novelization of a movie, I actually thought it was the other way around, and the movie was based on the book. I can honestly say I wouldn't have bought it if I knew.

Anna lives in the small Scottish town of Little Haven. She is a high school senior who is ready to get on with her life, and get out of Scotland. Her best friend, John, is of course in love with her, and has yet to tell her. She has many friends, and is the bane of the school's vice principal, Mr. Arthur Savage. Anna has dreams and aspirations. Anna is also a very single minded, and boring character. In fact, most of the characters are a little dull and flat. They begin to become stereotypes of what someone thinks teens are like. And one of the issues I have with this novel is that the premises or plot is that if makes Anna sound much more developed, a seventeen year old (I assume) girl who is dealing with the death of her mother (she died when Anna was twelve, why is it such a huge deal in this novel when it doesn't add anything to the story), and trying to survive high school.

The back of the book touts that it is a "horror comedy about a teenager who faces down the zombie apocalypse with a little help from her friends," but there weren't a lot of zombies in this until about page 85, and there was very little, if any, comedy. There were attempts, but most of the jokes were bad puns and terrible, terrible jokes. None of the characters were very interesting, except maybe Steph, but there wasn't enough backstory for her to be fully developed. For example, the reader knows that she was sent to the school and is from Canada. She has a girlfriend, and her parents are going to vacation in Mexico. She keeps saying she was sent away because she was "difficult" but it isn't really what is explained what she means by that, and she is very protective of the fact that she has a girlfriend, but she doesn't expand on that either (for example, did she have a bad experience while out with her girlfriend, or do her parents no accept that she is a lesbian).

When the zombie apocalypse does finally happen, there is a development that is explained either. In fact, a lot of things in this book seem to be glossed over. Like how is Anna's father, Tony, unable to protect himself against Savage? Why is Savage such a jerk and why is he so strong? Savage has zero background, and so the reader doesn't have any idea why he seems to hate people so much, especially the teens he works with. This book is all over the place.

While it could have been fun and interesting, there was nothing but sad attempts at humor and a noticeable lack of good zombie scenes. I do not recommend this novelization, and I cannot recommend this book. It is flat and there is not enough interesting about the characters to keep one interested. It is a fast read, and if I had the time I could have read it in one sitting, but it takes too long to get to the zombies, and the characters don't make me care enough to care if they live or die.

Movie Review - THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS

4/8/2019

The Girl With All the Gifts does share some similarities with the novel, but it isn’t really a lot like the novel. There are a lot of places in the movie that the divergence is clear, and it starts in the beginning, which I think might also be understandable. The book has a lot of information in it, and they cut some of it, probably due to the length of the movie. If they had kept it all it would have been longer than it hour and fifty-one minutes.

This movie is about a girl, Melanie, a scientist, and a teacher, who are trying to survive a dystopian/apocalyptic future full of zombies, which are called hungries in both the movie and the novel of the same name. In one instance everything changes, and Melanie finds herself defending her teacher in a way she didn’t know she could, and the teacher, scientist, a couple of soldiers, and Melanie find that they need to find a way to safety, to the Beacon of hope. However, a landscape full of hungries stands in their way, and they don’t know if they will survive, if they will be eaten, or if they will become a monster themselves. Of course, one question a lot of movies like this pose is who is the real monster?

Throughout the movie, Melanie, played by Sennia Nanua, portrays an innocent, playful, inquisitive child, well. She does not know what she is, although she does know that she is different. While she does still seem to be the same character in the movie as she is in the book, I feel that the movie made her a tad more intelligent and inquisitive than she was in the book. She still loves her teacher, Helen Justineau, and she does what she can to help her, but she isn’t as curious about the other children, nor is she as frightened as she was in the novel towards Doctor Caroline Caldwell.

Speaking of the other children, the movie makes a hasty introduction, but it isn’t really as thorough of the book, so it feels as if some of the information that made the story interesting is left out. The interactions between the children and the instructors and soldiers, isn’t as built as it could have been. In the novel, the reader knows how Melanie feels about Helen because there are several interactions, however in the movie there is only one scene in the schoolroom, and one outside, before everything goes to hell. The viewer of the movie doesn’t get as much background on the rest of the children, so there is no reason for the viewer to have as much sympathy for them as there was built in the novel.

Throughout it was obvious that several things had been changed due to the time restrictions of the film. The only monsters they had to face were the hungries, whereas in the book there are not only the hungries, but also humans with nothing to live for but their own selfish survival. The ending is a little different, but it isn’t a bad movie. Part of it, like a lot of movies, are a little slow, but overall, not bad. I will say, this is another case of I prefer the novel over the film, but that isn’t always true. I felt there was more depth to the novel that was lost in the film’s translation.

Book Review - THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS by M.R. Carey

The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey was an interesting zombie book about a bunch of children who don’t know they are anything but. The characters are there to protect themselves, teach the children, and to use the children to find a way to save humanity. Dr. Caldwell has one mission, and she keeps doing it, even if it goes against everything else everyone else wants. She doesn’t care about the cost, or repercussions of what she has and continues to do. Melanie is the main character, and the smartest child in the classroom. She waits every day for her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau. Justineau shows that she cares for the children, but she isn’t supposed to care, nor is she supposed to forget what they are – monsters.

The characters were all very interesting, although I did get frustrated with Dr. Caldwell and Sargent Parks. Caldwell is over and over only concerned with the children, and when she loses some of them she treats Melanie like property. I know this was part of the book, and that Dr. Caldwell had a purpose and wasn’t supposed to be liked. I realize that she was there to find the answers for the greater good. But, there could have been one moment of humanity from her, one moment, that made me not dislike her, one moment where she learned something from what she had been doing.

Sargent Parks could have been a little more interesting as well. He was the typical military man, only doing what his orders required him to do. Keeping the humans safe, not worrying about the “Hungaries” or zombies, and watching out for the “Junkers” – the men and women who survived the infection and live their lives as scavengers. I do get a little tired of seeing stringent military men, who follow the code, no matter what happens. They always end up the same way in books like this, dead, learning slowly along the way that they don’t have to treat the monsters as they do, because in reality, the monsters are the humans.

The relationship between Melanie and Miss Justineau was interesting, as it did make me wonder where the children who these people are using came from. Justineau was a mother figure to some, and a savior to at least one. The mother/daughter relationship develops in a way, that in the end one wonders who is the mother and who is the daughter.

The idea of the “Hungaries” in this book was interesting, although I would have like a little more backstory, as I didn’t see enough of what made the zombies different, besides a desire to eat human flesh. However, the idea of how these children will develop, and what they will do for the future. It all brings up the question, how will humanity save humanity? In the end will the human race find their humanity, or will they find ways to continue to destroy it.

In today’s society, and the political and moral climate that we currently live in, this book begs the question: how should we treat those who are different? And what steps should we take to protect and save those who can’t always save or protect themselves. It’s a frightening time, and this book, again about an apocalypse, makes one thing about their own humanity.

Book Review - HOW THE WHITE TRASH ZOMBIE GOT HER GROOVE BACK by Diana Rowland

9/15/2018

I might be one of the only people who was seriously disappointed in How The White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back, especially since up until this book I've really enjoyed this series. This book fell short for me in so many ways, and I am not happy with how little the characters have changed, except Pietro, he changed a ton in this book.

In this part of the series, Angel finds herself once again doing things she isn't prepared for. She seems to often find herself in situations she isn't prepared for, and often when it does happen her self doubt and self pity is overwhelming and boring. In this novel none of that changed. Angel doesn't listen to those who know more than her, and she ends up saving the day as always, but in stupid, stupid ways.

The relationship between Angel and Marcus is tenuous, and in all honestly it never seemed to be a good one On a side note, there didn't seem to be much steam between the two characters. Angel and Marcus never seemed to meet in a good hot, sexy scene. I don't really read much romance or erotica, but there should have been some chemistry between the two. The end of the book sets Angel up to be in a relationship with a different character in the novel, a character who seems to be an unlikely partner for Angel. In fact the author sets it up so that Angel seems like she is a horny teenager, wanting sex with a lot of men, but always asking herself why she has these sexual feelings.

There was a lot that happened in this novel, and I don't think any of it moved the story along, in fact it seemed to be written for two reasons only. The first was to change Pietro as a character and give the zombies a new power or ability. The second was to change Andrew Saber, and give him a little more depth, but I don't think we needed to read four books to get to this point.

These books are starting to feel, to me, as if they have no idea where they are going, or what story they are trying to tell. I mean, in previous books Angel is seriously worried all of the time about losing her job, and in this one she takes off for days/weeks and gives her job zero thought. This bothered me, because she has been concerned so often, it doesn't seem like her character at all.

Lastly, what bothered me about this book was the title. It in no way had Angel "getting her groove back." In fact, it seemed ass if she was more self-deprecating and whiny in this book were worse than all of the previous books, and in all honesty, I didn't like her very much.

I think this is the last in the series I will read, which is unfortunate because I really enjoyed the idea of the books and the different take on zombies.

NaNoWriMo

11/24/2017

I've done it. Yesterday I finished the contest for the month for NaNoWriMo at 50,334, but this doesn't mean I am done writing. I feel both good and bad about it. Why? Let me tell you.

I have been working on a new project this month. It has been wonderful since it has also been a while since I've written, really written. This idea came to me in the form of a book title, and then the first chapter, and then it kept going. I've gotten a little sidetracked in it and it will need some major work, but at least it is something, and it might even, eventually, be something good. It feels good to have written, and most days I actually got 2,000 words, which means it isn't impossible. The problem, or at least what I tell myself is a problem, is that I am also an English Professor, and I often have 2-4 classes of papers I have to grade, and I have to do it in a timely manner. Do you know how hard it is to write and grade papers at the same time? Well, for me it isn't easy because I get so stuck in the editing of everything and making sure my grammar is correct that I don't know what to do.

But, I can do it, if I space things out properly and don't have to grade all of the papers from all of the classes in one week, which I have planned for better this next semester. So I am planning, after this weekend because I need a break from thinking so I can read for a minute, to write every day like I have been, and my continued goal is to write at least 2,000 words, which is not impossible.

I feel bad because I shouldn't have been working on something new when I have the last installment of my zombie series to complete. I know, sometimes as a write you can't help but get sidetracked by an idea, but I have been, and it hurts because I really do want to get this zombie novel out of me, and round out the series. I know where it is going, but I've been having problems getting there, partly because one of my characters is refusing to die, and I need them dead. Now, there is a flip side and a good part! I know I can keep writing, so next week I will be working on both books, it might be one thousand words in one and on thousand in the other, but I can do it. I look forward to doing it.

My new novel might be crap now, and honestly it probably is, I mean no one writes a great novel in the first draft, no matter what they say. There is always editing, and cutting and refurbishing, and if they tell you any different they are entirely full of themselves. Even the greats don't have a perfect first draft, and they are honest about it. I'll keep plugging away, and we will see where it gets me, and we will see if you out there in internet land even likes it, or me!

Author Interview with Wayne Miller

7/23/2017

Today I have a treat for you, an interview with author and playwright Wayne Miller. Mr. Miller has written and produced several plays in and around the Huntsville, Alabama area, and is known for not shying away from tough subjects. He has also recently released his first novel, to which there are links at the bottom of the interview.

You have written plays and at least one novel, do you have a preference of which you write?
Not really. I love both. Each has its own unique charms. I do like that plays don't take as long to write, though.

What is your favorite genre to work on, since you have written in several genres? Why?
I'm a Horror junkie, through and through. As to why, exactly, I don't really know. It could be as simple as my parents letting me watch old monster movies when I was little. Or I could get all deep and psychological with it and comment on the ways in which make-believe horrors make the horrors of the real world easier to process; how Horror as a genre allows human beings to experience fear in a safe way, and how it is vital to our mental health to develop the proper coping mechanisms for dealing with fear. Or, if you ask some people, I'm just a sicko. You can take your pick. :)

What is the first book that made you cry? Why?
I honestly can't remember. I know Where the Red Fern Grows damn near killed me in elementary school.

What authors did you dislike at first but grew into? What changed your mind about them.
I used to hate the Harry Potter books. Not so much because I thought they were bad. There were just so, so many Fantasy books I thought were more worthy of all the attention, and all these kids had never heard of them. But watching the movies (because my wife made me) led me to a respect for the overall story. Plus Twilight came along and made me realize just how good the Harry Potter books were, after all, and deserving of the accolades.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
Both. But it's a good exhaustion.

You just published your first novel, did you find the experience exhausting or inspiring? Why?
Inspiring. I detest the traditional publishing route, had tried to go that route, and even used to work in that industry. Technology has advanced to the point that an author doesn't have to choose between traditional publishing with all its drawbacks and throwing money away on a vanity press. It is now possible to go around the minefield.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
It didn't, really. If anything, maybe I won't second guess myself so much in the future, worrying about whether something I want to do or say will satisfy some industry crony.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
It depends. If the book is set in the present day, that requires little in the way of research. Historical stories are more involved.

What did you edit out of this book? Why?
This one? Me – yes this recent one. Just a word here, a sentence there. I didn't make any big cuts.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
On books I want to read. The best thing a writer can do is read as much as he can get his hands on. Read for pleasure. Read to educate yourself. Read to study style.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?
There are so many. One of the biggest, I'd say, is grammar. You have to learn the rules before you break the rules. Back when I used to work as a submissions editor, if a manuscript came across my desk and there were grammatical mistakes or misspelled words, I'd dismiss it out of hand. One must learn to write properly before he can make the words "sing."

What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?
I've been to Cross Plains, Texas, home to Robert E. Howard, several times. I've visited the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia, where they have the original notes Bram Stoker wrote for Dracula and a whole wing dedicated to Maurice Sendek, author of Where the Wild Things Are. I've sat in the sharecropper's shack in Louisiana where the "Brer Rabbit" stories were first compiled.

In your opinion, what is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?
Those literary agents who've figured a way around the rule against charging reader's fees, in fact some of the biggest names in the business are guilty of it, and they get away with it because of who they are.

What is your writing Kryptonite?
I have to be alone to write. If anyone else is around I can't do it.

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
I'm not the fastest typist. I really should have taken typing in high school, but who knew I'd need it one day?

Movie Review - RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER

7/15/2017

I was excited to finally see the last movie in the RESIDENT EVIL movie series, or at least what I hope is the last movie in the series, but I was really let down. As a zombie lover I have followed and watched every one of these movies, because it felt as if I had to keep up with the zombie genre, and because I really enjoyed the first two movies (yes they did have a lot of problems but they were fun entertainment). This movie was a huge disappointment.

The plot is Alice is basically forced to return to Racoon City and the Hive to bring the Umbrella Corporation to an end and save the last living survivors. That was all that it was about, literally this is all that happened, and there was no character development or plot development, neither did it add anything to the rest of the series. The only thing it did was put an end (maybe) to the Resident Evil franchise. I am sure that if they feel like it they will find a way to make another movie since they have been so profitable.

I had so many problems with this movie. It begins with Alice coming out of a hole with no additional information, and if it has been a while since you have watched the last movie you might not know what is going on. From the beginning Alice seems to have forgotten everything from the previous movies, and she no longer seems to know how to fight or protect herself, against anyone or anything. She continually gets her ass kicked throughout the entire movie, by monsters, by zombies, by humans, and by clones. She acts like she isn't strong, and she acts like she doesn't know how to protect herself, which is something she has been doing the entire series.

When she meets up with a group of survivors we learn very little about them, so why should the audience care when anyone dies. In fact the only character to root for is Claire (played once again by Ali Larter). If you have watched the movies you have seen her go from a wide-eyed innocent to a kick ass woman. The problem is that she isn't used very much in the movie, and the only character development we get for her is that she is in a relationship. It is all very dull.

This movie has none of the things that I enjoyed in the past few movies, especially since she continually gets her ass kicked. Part of the fun of these movies were the action sequences, but they weren't much fun in this film. I can't believe I am about to write this, but there were way too many zombies, and none of them were interesting. The monsters weren't even interesting because there were only a few of them throughout the movie and they were sparsely used. The biggest monsters are the humans, and even they aren't interesting.

I really disliked this movie. It didn't bring anything to the Resident Evil series, and it wasn't very well done. I feel like someone could have done a lot better job ending the series, in a more cohesive and interesting manner, that would have made me feel like the series was ending as well as it began. But, no, it lost steam and was just awful.

I don't recommend watching this movie, not only was it not good, but it did not live up to the rest of the movies in the series, even the last one RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION, which I didn't think was great, but it did have some fun in it.

Movie Review - Hidden (2015)

5/4/2017

For 301 days a family has been living in a bomb shelter, trying to remain safe after an apocalyptic outbreak of some virus that is not named or mentioned. A father, mother and young daughter named Zoe, are all that we are left to believe remain of the living world. The hide, afraid of the "breathers" hoping to survive and life long enough to figure out what is going on, and what might be the next thing to do.

This movie is slow to start. It begins with a family going through the motions, trying to keep things under control and pleasant for their young daughter. The family finds a rat has been getting into their supply of food, and this is when the trouble seems to begin. They stalk the areas to see if they can find the rat before it eats too many of their rations. When they do find the rat, something goes wrong and a fire begins, causing a cascade of issues. The family must not go outside to move things and make sure no one saw the smoke or ashes from the fire, otherwise their lives may not be in danger, and their very existence may falter.

Okay so here is a SPOILER so if you haven't seen this movie I suggest you don't keep reading this part.

This movie is a zombie movie of sorts. The family has been affected by a virus which has gone airborne. The virus causes them to become homicidal if they get angry. They turn into zombiesque monsters, their eyes become black and black veins develop under their pale skin. They can't go outside as the breathers are military members of some sort who are to keep the infected in the quarantined zone and kill whoever tries to escape. The family has been noticed and their safe haven has been infiltrated. They now must run, or die.

This movie was a delight, as it not only put a new spin on the zombie apocalypse, but it focused on the zombie side of things. For example the family had a set of rules, and rule number one was to stay calm. Any time they lose control they lose who they were and turned, but if they calmed down they could return to who they were before, meaning that they managed how they lived and if they became a zombie or not. The living were essentially the bad guys, as they only killed the infected. This is especially obvious when the mother and daughter are caught in a net and the head of the military squad notices the jacket the little girl is wearing. He says, "Zoe, I have a little girl your age. What a shame." So, the living obviously feel nothing.

This movie also portrays a dismal future, as several post-apocalyptic movies show the worst of humanity. There always seems to be a group who wants to kill another group, whether it is the living killing the dead or the suffering killing the survivors, there is always a group full of hate, and they do it because that is what they have been told to do. I am sure there could have been a way for the uninfected to place the infected in a safe area, where they could live their lives, instead of being culled like cattle.

I honestly recommend this flick. It was interesting, it portrayed the infected as interesting characters, and it set a suspenseful tone that kept me wondering what was going to happen. Although it is a little slow to start, it builds, as the "breathers" are mentioned several times, enough that the audience becomes anxious to see who these "breathers" are.

Events and Stuff

4/11/2017

And so the fun begins. Actually I love Author events and markets. I love meeting new and old fans. And honestly I love talking horror and zombies, and well, writing with anyone and everyone. So this month and next month I have booked myself for two events. Come see me! I will be running a special since I don't currently have any copies of book 1, ZOMBIES ARE PEOPLE TOO. If you buy book 2, ZOMBIES BITE, or even book 3, ZOMBIE WASTELAND, I will give you a free eBook of ZOMBIES ARE PEOPLE TOO. This is a great deal because I don't often give things out for free, why? Because this is my job, and only one of them, so I, like everyone else, need to make some money so I can continue!

On April 22 I will be at the downtown Huntsville library from 12-4. The address is 915 Monroe St SW, Huntsville, AL 35801. Here is a link if you want to look up the event or add it to your calendar.
https://hmcpl.org/node/133640

Another event I will be at is in May, just one day before my awesome birthday! The date for the event? May 27th. I will be at the 3rd Annual Catfish Literary Festival in the Athens library from 10-4, selling books and meeting all of the awesome people! The address for that is 603 S Jefferson St, Athens, AL 35611. And here is the link for that if you want to look it up or add it to your calendar.
www.alcpl.org/event/3rd-annual-catfish-literary-festival/

There will be several excellent and interesting authors at both events, so hopefully there will be something for everyone's taste!

Lastly, I just watched a movie, THE ATTICUS INSTITUTE, and it really doesn't deserve an entire review post. It was a derisive and cliched movie, attempting to explore paranormal powers and possession. It was dull, and did not keep my interest. I do not recommend this as it tries to explain itself through a documentary style that doesn't quite work or explain what is going on. And really, the movie sets itself up for a sequel to be made when there isn't one needed because I just didn't care enough about the characters to want to watch more.
