Book Review - THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS by M.R. Carey

11/23/2018

The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey was an interesting zombie book about a bunch of children who don’t know they are anything but. The characters are there to protect themselves, teach the children, and to use the children to find a way to save humanity. Dr. Caldwell has one mission, and she keeps doing it, even if it goes against everything else everyone else wants. She doesn’t care about the cost, or repercussions of what she has and continues to do. Melanie is the main character, and the smartest child in the classroom. She waits every day for her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau. Justineau shows that she cares for the children, but she isn’t supposed to care, nor is she supposed to forget what they are – monsters.

The characters were all very interesting, although I did get frustrated with Dr. Caldwell and Sargent Parks. Caldwell is over and over only concerned with the children, and when she loses some of them she treats Melanie like property. I know this was part of the book, and that Dr. Caldwell had a purpose and wasn’t supposed to be liked. I realize that she was there to find the answers for the greater good. But, there could have been one moment of humanity from her, one moment, that made me not dislike her, one moment where she learned something from what she had been doing.

Sargent Parks could have been a little more interesting as well. He was the typical military man, only doing what his orders required him to do. Keeping the humans safe, not worrying about the “Hungaries” or zombies, and watching out for the “Junkers” – the men and women who survived the infection and live their lives as scavengers. I do get a little tired of seeing stringent military men, who follow the code, no matter what happens. They always end up the same way in books like this, dead, learning slowly along the way that they don’t have to treat the monsters as they do, because in reality, the monsters are the humans.

The relationship between Melanie and Miss Justineau was interesting, as it did make me wonder where the children who these people are using came from. Justineau was a mother figure to some, and a savior to at least one. The mother/daughter relationship develops in a way, that in the end one wonders who is the mother and who is the daughter.

The idea of the “Hungaries” in this book was interesting, although I would have like a little more backstory, as I didn’t see enough of what made the zombies different, besides a desire to eat human flesh. However, the idea of how these children will develop, and what they will do for the future. It all brings up the question, how will humanity save humanity? In the end will the human race find their humanity, or will they find ways to continue to destroy it.

In today’s society, and the political and moral climate that we currently live in, this book begs the question: how should we treat those who are different? And what steps should we take to protect and save those who can’t always save or protect themselves. It’s a frightening time, and this book, again about an apocalypse, makes one thing about their own humanity.

Book Review - WHITE TRASH ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE by Diana Rowland

I really enjoy the White Trash Zombie series, but of the three books I've read thus far this has not been the best. White Trash Zombie Apocalypse takes place in the same location as the last two, but this time, Angel sees that a zombie movie is being filmed at her old high school, and on the field where she lost her virginity (as we hear a few times in the book).

There are some of the same things in this book that were in the last few, things that annoyed me. Angel and her every so often boyfriend, Marcus, don't seem to be very compatible as he is always treating here like she doesn't know what she is doing or that she shouldn't be doing what she is doing. Her relationship with another zombie, Philip, is frustrating because there is all weirdness that isn't at all explained. Her work at the coroners office, which is one of the funnest parts of these books, is hardly represented in this novel. And she misses something important at the end that the author had been building up since the beginning of the book, and that was really frustrating. I felt as if this one thing had happened then Angel would be able to move on to more fun and exciting things in the next book, but she is still stuck.

I do enjoy the relationship between her and her father and how it has developed throughout the books. I also enjoy the character of Heather and Brian, two new characters who were introduced in this book.

Overall, I will probably still read the next book because I think the idea is a good one, and I am not quite ready to give up on Angel, even though she needs to stop being so whiny and girlie (I'm a little girl who can take care of myself but I'm so scared of everything). We will see if I still want to read it after the next book. If Angel doesn't grow any more and stays as frustrating and whiny then I may not continue reading the series. Although Diana Rowland has another series with a strong female character that I might try.

Movie Review - PANDEMIC

7/30/2018

Pandemic is a 2016 zombie movie that really wasn’t up to par, even for a zombie movie.

The plot summary from IMDb is: Pandemic is set in the near future, where a virus of epic proportions has overtaken the planet. There are more infected than uninfected, and humanity is losing its grip on survival. Its only hope is finding a cure and keeping the infected contained. Lauren (Rachel Nichols) is a doctor, who, after the fall of New York, comes to Los Angeles to lead a team to hunt for and rescue uninfected survivors.

This movie has a small cast of characters that don’t really get developed enough for one to care about. It starts with a family and short snippets of their life, but then it goes nowhere. The movie wants you to care about the family, but it doesn’t give you enough to actually care about them. The only person, really, that you care about is one of the soldiers, Denise, and a little about the driver, Wheeler (which I thought was a somewhat cliché name for a driver). The main character, Lauren, only seems to be in the movie to make the audience mad and to do all of the things one shouldn’t do during a zombie apocalypse.

After watching this movie I looked it up and it doesn’t have good review on either Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb, which is something I should have looked at before I wasted my time watching it. As a zombie movie it wasn’t even satisfying, as it didn’t at all delve into the reason behind the infection, how people changed during or from the infection, or how life changed in places where people were infected. There were a few scenes of the little bad of soldiers being chased by those who were infected, and one unfortunate scene of one of the soldiers being hit by a car, kidnapped, and then eaten, but it didn’t impact me the way it could have if I had been involved in either the characters or the zombies.

So to say this was a dull movie is really giving it more credibility than it deserves. I was not only bored, but I just didn’t want to continue watching it. If I wasn’t watching it for this review I would have turned it off long ago, instead I wasted my time so that none of you would have to waste yours.

And if you are getting what I thought of this movie, I thought I would have watched almost anything else but this sad farce of a zombie/infected/let’s save people film.

This weekend I will be at Rocket City Nerdcon signing books and selling bookmarks. I will have a limited supply of my first book ZOMBIES ARE PEOPLE TOO, so come early and come fast. I am always happy to meet my fans!

Here is the link to buy tickets:

And now for other news! I am releasing a short story tomorrow for free. This story involves a minor character from book three ZOMBIE WASTELAND. The title of my story is DON'T BURY YOUR DEAD, and is a zombie story from a zombies point of view. I am very excited to release it before Nerdcon, and before the start of NaNoWriMo next month. All next month I will be working on my last book, ZOMBIMERICA, and hopefully I can get through this halfway point and have it for you all late next year.

Lastly, I have a question. I want to know what scares you? Once I finish with my zombie series I am not sure I will be continuing to work in the zombie genre, so I want to know what scares you? What gives you chills just to think about? What makes you shiver when you are walking to your car in the dark of night? What wakes you sweaty and shaking from a deep sleep when you are at home alone at night?

TV Review - DEAD SET

9/15/2016

I was bored today while I was grading student homework and decided to put on a television show. DEAD SET had been on my list for a little while, so I decided to give it a go. This show takes place mostly in the British BIG BROTHER house, and they don't know that the zombie apocalypse has started.

This was a great show, and very easy to watch. Each episode was about 21 minutes long, and they seemed to go by slow and fast at the same time. Each episode was action packed and for 21 minutes it was really great to have so much happen in each episode.

The characters were all wonderful, you had the stupid girl and the stupid guy who each take turns getting everyone killed. There is the good guy who may not make it to the end because he is so good and helps the others survive, so can he live? There is the girlfriend looking for her boyfriend, this character usually starts as a screaming bimbo who almost gets herself killed several times, but she usually ends this as a badass. There are the filler characters, the emotional one who tries to help someone who was bitten or whatever and ends up dying, the guy who is a stoner or drinker who eventually turns into the guy who almost saves them all, the guy who looks unassuming and ends up being the one who is surprisingly great with a gun. And of course there is the jackass who ends up doing stupid, selfish stuff and gets others killed. All of these characters were fabulous and interesting.

The action doesn't take place in very many places, the studio and a little outside in the real world, and there are television cameras to look at. This isn't your typical zombie show. It didn't end as I expected, and I was actually I surprised it ended the way it did. It was fascinating and I absolutely loved it. It is a short commitment, one season, five episodes, about 21 minutes each, give it a whirl. It is better than watching a stupid movie you may not end up liking.

I will add one more thing, this show is pretty gory. So if you aren't good with a lot of gore, blood, and flesh eating, don't even start it. If you are okay with all of that, then I highly recommend this show.

Birmingham Writer's Conference

7/18/2016

I just returned from the AWC writer's conference in Birmingham and I have to say it was very enjoyable. Not only did I meet several new and known awesome authors, but I learned a lot.

I attended several classes such as: Editing, The "me" in Memoir, Blogging, Creative Non-Fiction, and Taking the Mystery out of Mystery. First I have to say that the editing class was very well done, although I wish it was a little less about poetry and expanded a little more on how to work on prose. There were several poets there so I am assuming they found this more helpful than I did, even though I found it very helpful.

The Memoir class was great for all writers, not just memoir writers. It had a lot of information on how to strengthen a scene and how to put yourself into a scene (which in turn will put your readers in the scene and make the scene more powerful.

Creative Non-Fiction wasn't as helpful as I would have liked. The man teaching the class talked more about his own career in journalism and the Pulitzer prizes he won rather than what made creative non-fiction and how to write creative non-fiction. It was not he best class and I felt like I learned very little since I walked away still wondering what the heck creative non-fiction is.

Taking the mystery out of mystery was very interesting. I didn't realize there were as many subgenres of the mystery genre as there was. And I will be honest I had no idea what the hell "cozy" mysteries were, nor did I realize that they even existed. It was a very informative class and I think I may look more into the mystery genre.

All in all I really enjoyed this conference and I hope to be free to go next year. I met some of the most awesome people. I learned a lot. And right now I am working on several stories including the last zombie book.

And in the zombie arena I will have a free story at the end of this month, it goes between books three and four and involves a very minor character from book 3 ZOMBIE WASTELAND.

Movie Review - PREDESTINATION

7/13/2016

PREDESTINATION is a 2014 Australian science fiction movie based on a short story by Robert Heinlein. The summary from IMDb reads For his final assignment, a top temporal agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time. The chase turns into a unique, surprising and mind-bending exploration of love, fate, identity and time travel taboos. The movie stars Ethan Hawke as The Barkeep and really the main character in the story if you follow and watch the entire movie.

I watched this with someone who has read a lot of science fiction, and apparently knows a lot about the rules of science fiction time travel. Once the movie was over I turned to them and asked what the hell we just watched. They answered with you need to read more science fiction. I guess that maybe I do, since my head literally hurt after watching this movie. I wasn't sure what the point was, so I took the night and thought about it, trying to figure out what the point of the movie was. I didn't, but I realized that it was a thinker and I didn't hate it.

How do you travel through time in a casual loop when you yourself have no origin? This was the question asked in the movie, and it was never really answered. Another question, can you change the future if you travel to the past to change the future? The answer to this is apparently no. If you try to change some things you can't because some things are destined to be, hence the title PREDESTINATION. This presents a problem to me. If a movie is all about the question "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" What is the movie really all about.

Is it asking if we are all in a time loop? Is is trying to tell us that we all just do what we were predestined to do, like zombies? Changing one thing never changes another and you can't change what you do in the future or the past.

I recommend this if you are a science fiction fan, also think you might enjoy this if you aren't a science fiction fan. I can't say I understood all of this, but it really made me think. And movie that make me think are always my kind of movies.

Zombie Story

7/11/2016

I just finished my first round of edit on a new zombie story which will be released at the end of this month. It goes between the third book, ZOMBIE WASTELAND and the fourth book, ZOMBIMERICA. I am not yet sure what I will call it, but the main characters are the zombies. If anyone has any suggestion I am open and if I use your title I will of course give you credit, so blow me away!

I have some titles in mind, but nothing seems to work. So I am asking you, my internet beauties to help an author out. If I don't use any of your suggestions for this story, I will keep a file of them in case they work for a future story...or even a future book.

On another note, I am continuing to work on book four. I apologize for not updating the playlists every day but I haven't always been able to write them down as I have been distracted by actually writing. I will try to have some in the next week or two, because I feel that if I share them with you I am inviting you to be a part of the writing process with me.

Zombies

6/28/2016

When writing from a zombies point of view what would you listen to dear internet reader? Today this was just the question, what do I listen to when writing from a ten year old zombies point of view, and yes, she is much wider than most living ten year old's.

This is what happened when I let her choose my music:

Mother by Danzig
Blood Pressure by Mutemath
Cry Little Sister by G Tom
Ladies of the World by Flight of the Concords
Cradle of Love by Billy Idol
Dragula by Rob Zombie
Fuck You by Cee Lo Green
Back to Black by Amy Winehouse
They Won't Go When I Go by George Michael
Dirty Paws by Of Monsters and Men
Chop Suey by System of a Down
Left Hand Free by alt-J
The Nights by Avicli
In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins
Far From Any Road by The Handsome Family

Then I lost my train of thought so only 1640 words down today, but again that is better than zero. So I am on my way to getting book 4 ZOMBIMERICA done. I'm working on the free story that goes between books 3 and 4, which is good for you out there in internet-land. Plus, in September and October I have evens in Huntsville, Alabama where I will be selling myself, signing books, and basically pimping zombies. So look for more information on those events, coming to this blog near you soon.
