Movie Review - CABIN FEVER (2016)

9/24/2018

The 2016 remake of the movie Cabin Fever was almost a step-by-step remake of the original movie by Eli Roth. There are some differences between the two, and if you have seen the original you might think that it isn’t worth it to see the remake. I am here to tell you, that while it isn’t the best movie, it was worth the time.

Cabin fever is about a group of five friends who rent a cabin near a small town. They find that the people of and around the town aren’t the most welcoming, and they learn that sometimes, you need to trust your instincts and get out of there.

One by one, after a meeting with an infected camper they are each infected with a flesh eating disease, and from there bad things ensue. Each one of the friends find themselves infected, in almost the same way as they do in the original. There are several small differences in the movie, which were appreciated and humorous, but the biggest differences were in the kid at the front of the store and the deputy that warns and checks on the kids.

The kid in the front of the store still says, “pancakes,” which is still weird. However the kid does not do all of the weird karate kicks and things along those lines. He wasn’t as well acted as the original child was, and there was a little bit of a lackluster performance from him. So while this was a major difference, it wasn’t a good one.

The second major difference was in the character of the deputy, Deputy Winston. The character was a female, and she was fabulous. She was funny, interesting, and willing to party. The acting was well done, and she was just as skeevy as she would have been if she as a man. She was probably the best acted character and I enjoyed her.

The movie ends almost the same as well. The main character tries to kill his crush when she begs for death, but after hitting her once with a shovel he realizes he can’t do it, so instead he sets her on fire, which I think is a horrible way to die. The other girl still gets eaten by a dog, but they try to make it more horrifying as she runs out of the cabin, naked, with blood and open wounds all over her body. Two get shot, one by the townsfolk, and the other by the deputy. And the last still dies off in the woods, all by himself.

This was fun to watch since the original was an interesting and new idea. It was a better remake than the remake of Psycho, so I think if you have a moment and aren’t sure what to watch, watch this, if for nothing else than Deputy Winston. And trust me, there isn't any other reason to watch this because the acting is not on par, or even close, to the original.

Movie Review - DON'T BREATHE

9/7/2016

There are times, when a movie comes along and you think to yourself, "well this is so predictable" then your mind is blown. DON'T BREATHE is one of those movies.

The summary from IMDb reads: Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems. If you out there in internetland have seen the previews then you know that this is exactly what the previews and trailers show. You also see one of the characters die (so you already know that's going to happen), but what you don't see is the twist which caused the movie to take a really weird turn.

I thought this movie would be the same as it seemed in the previews and trailers, but I was wrong, and honestly I am not sure I liked the twist (I thought it was a little weird) but since I didn't expect it, I was happy to have it. Now, that being said, I have to say it didn't make me like the movie any more, but I did enjoy it, even if I did think it was a little over-the-top.

I felt that none of the characters were likable, and I felt that the movie was going to end with a toss up between the two evils. For one, you don't break into a blind man's house, just don't. Second you don't keep trying to find the money you broke in for when everyone keeps getting killed and there is a secret in the house that causes the blind man to be even more scary. Lastly, if you are trapped in a house and a man is trying to protect his stuff by killing everyone or maiming them and he seems to have some scary, super skills, maybe you should just walk away and forget it.

Beside the surprises towards the end of the movie, and the weird twist, most of the movie was predictable. I am not sure what I would classify this movie as since it had both horror elements and suspense/thriller elements, but I feel it is probably more in line with the horror genre. I recommend that if you are bored with most horror movies out there, go see this one, it's not the best, but it is one of the more original endings I have seen...well really one of the most original second halves to be honest.

Movie Review - TRUTH OR DIE

5/3/2016

I wasn't sure about this movie when I first began to watch it. It started like a lot of other movies, a group of friends at a party, having fun at the party, making someone feel awkward at the party. So I thought that maybe this was going to be like a lot of other movies. The person who was made to feel awkward goes out and takes revenge on all those who made them feel bad. It kind of was like this, but much more interesting.

IMDb has the movie summarized as a young British boys and girls travel to an isolated cabin after being promised a night of heavy partying. Instead of the fun they hoped for, they meet a killer out to reap vengeance on them for the death of his brother. This summary does not do this movie justice, it is so much more.

Truth or Dare is a popular game played by schoolchildren. This movie puts a new twist on this innocent game (which usually involves someone kissing someone) and turns it into a game of truth or die. The brother of the boy who died has decided to seek revenge for what his brother did. It involves pride, military idealism, and the need for his brother to not be homosexual. The group of friends are tied to chairs so the brother can interrogate them and find our which one of them sent a postcard to his suicidal brother. He asks them to play truth or dare, but instead it is truth or let's see who gets to guzzle gas and die. One by one the group turn on each other, until they learn who sent the postcard.

Havoc ensues, people die, people get the revenge they desire, and it isn't who or how I expected it.

As far as a horror movie goes, this has lots of gore and blood, and one innocent person quickly gets their neck snapped in a very intense scene, but it isn't really a horror movie as much as it is an intense thriller or suspense.

I liked this movie, I liked the evil of the brother, and the end was not exactly what I was expecting. I thought it held my interest after we got away from the beginning party scene, which I will admit took way too long. If you are bored and wondering what to watch, I suggest giving TRUTH OR DIE a chance.

The Vegetarian Question

2/12/2016

I used to be a pescatarian. I would only eat fish. Then I had issues with low iron and couldn't take iron supplements, so I decided to eat meat again. Today, I saw a baby cow frolicking in a field like a child frolics, and it made me think I should give Vegetarianism another try.

I love the taste of cow. I love the taste of bacon. I enjoy ground turkey in my chili. I don't eat chicken, but after watching a video about how they are treated, I couldn't eat them anymore. I know there are farmers who treat their animals with the best of care. I know there are farmers who, even thought they raise their animals to be food, they still feel bad killing them. I have no problem with people who eat meat, I love eating meat, but there is just something nagging me in the back of my brain. Souls.

I am not one of those people who feel like animals do not have a soul. I have been told by many of my religious friends that animals don't have souls. I have been told by my non-religious friends that animals don't have souls. I have been told by my friends who believe with ghosts tell me that animals don't become ghosts, so they don't have souls. I personally believe that all living beings have souls. If an animal can feel pain (which they can, I know, I stepped on my cat's paw yesterday and she howled in pain, then I made sure to check her paw to see if it is okay), how do they not have souls? If an animal feels sadness at the loss of another animal companion, they are obviously more than just stupid creatures with no emotional responses or feelings.

There is a video going around of a raccoon who's friend gets hit by a car. No one cares about the dying animal. Normally we don't look back at that animal we have hit with out car. I, personally, would be crushed if I killed an animal with my car. It isn't their fault they are in the road, they don't know any better, we aren't making things easy for them. Anyway, back to the video. The raccoon is obviously upset about his friend. He walks over and comforts his friend, not understanding what has just happened to his friend. As his friend lays dying, he cries, and the world around him just keeps moving on. When his friend is finally gone he moves on, sadly, his body language tells everyone who watches the video how broken he feels.

Now, let's not go around saying that I am going vegetarian because I have all these "feels" for animals, that's not the only reason. I also find that when I eat meat I feel nauseous after I eat it. I think that may be my body telling me something. So, starting next month I am going to try to go back to just fish, and a little turkey (because I can eat it in chili and I love chili).

I don't care if you eat meat. Eat all the meat. It's fine. I won't judge you for eating meat. All I ask is that you try to eat meat which has been humanely taken care of and killed. And the next time you hit an opossum and kill it with your car, take a moment to be sad, you just ended a life.
