Book Review - RED RISING by Pierce Brown

RED RISING is a young adult dystopian novel by Pierce Brown. The novel follow Darrow, a young red helldiver who works in some of the most dangerous mines. The reds are accompanied by the other colors who all compete for more food and accommodations. After trouble causes Darrow to do something life-altering things change and he finds that the world in not quite what he has been led to believe.

There were parts of this book which were quite interesting. The love between Darrow and Eo, and the family dynamics were quite fascinating. However they were not as well developed as they could have been. They almost seemed to be left unfinished and when a big bad happens to change Darrow's life not a tear was shed, in fact I felt pretty much nothing which the author shouldn't have done. This book showed way too much telling and not enough showing. I didn't really get to see how the characters looked, or what the surroundings looked like. Several of the scenes seemed like they had been written in haste to get to another scene. One moment when Darrow and Eo are enjoying a place they shouldn't be should have created a sense of emotion or a view of the surroundings, and yet it created neither.

If you are a young adult or a child you might enjoy this book, but as an adult it bored me. Halfway through I wanted to quit reading it because I didn't care what happened to Darrow. Honestly the DIVERGENT series and the HUNGER GAMES series were much better as they started off. Yes I was upset at the way the DIVERGENT series ended, but the books held my interest and created a sense of desire to continue reading.
