What are you reading?

I have been reading a lot, but am having a hard time finding new things to read. So I wonder what you are reading out there internet land?

Recently I've read:

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN - I thought it followed the vein of GONE GIRL too much, with multiple characters and a possible death. I wasn't a fan of the book GONE GIRL, and I felt while this was trying to be inventive, it was a little too predictable. I will probably go and see the movie, mostly because I like to torture myself and partly because I hope they do it differently but doubt they will.

THE FINAL DIAGNOSIS - This book was pretty interesting. It was all about pathology and autopsies. It detailed several autopsies and revealed the cause of death. While I enjoyed this book I thought it was a little too full of assumptions by the author about the lives of the deceased. There were details about causes of death that I had never heard of, which was interesting. I am not sure about the authors writing style.

I am currently reading RED HILL, which is a book in the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. I find it both interesting and annoying. The zombies have started and none of the main characters are surprised. None of them are surprised when their phones don't work. None of them are surprised when cars are abandoned in the middle of the street and people are running around being bitten and eaten. None of them stop to help anyone, and I mean anyone! They are only surprised when a group of people shoots other people in cold blood. This is seriously unrealistic in a survivalist type of situation. At least one of the characters should be surprised and horrified by the things taking place, but none are.

So what are you reading? Anything interesting?

TV Review - DEAD SET

9/15/2016

I was bored today while I was grading student homework and decided to put on a television show. DEAD SET had been on my list for a little while, so I decided to give it a go. This show takes place mostly in the British BIG BROTHER house, and they don't know that the zombie apocalypse has started.

This was a great show, and very easy to watch. Each episode was about 21 minutes long, and they seemed to go by slow and fast at the same time. Each episode was action packed and for 21 minutes it was really great to have so much happen in each episode.

The characters were all wonderful, you had the stupid girl and the stupid guy who each take turns getting everyone killed. There is the good guy who may not make it to the end because he is so good and helps the others survive, so can he live? There is the girlfriend looking for her boyfriend, this character usually starts as a screaming bimbo who almost gets herself killed several times, but she usually ends this as a badass. There are the filler characters, the emotional one who tries to help someone who was bitten or whatever and ends up dying, the guy who is a stoner or drinker who eventually turns into the guy who almost saves them all, the guy who looks unassuming and ends up being the one who is surprisingly great with a gun. And of course there is the jackass who ends up doing stupid, selfish stuff and gets others killed. All of these characters were fabulous and interesting.

The action doesn't take place in very many places, the studio and a little outside in the real world, and there are television cameras to look at. This isn't your typical zombie show. It didn't end as I expected, and I was actually I surprised it ended the way it did. It was fascinating and I absolutely loved it. It is a short commitment, one season, five episodes, about 21 minutes each, give it a whirl. It is better than watching a stupid movie you may not end up liking.

I will add one more thing, this show is pretty gory. So if you aren't good with a lot of gore, blood, and flesh eating, don't even start it. If you are okay with all of that, then I highly recommend this show.

Movie Review - DON'T BREATHE

9/7/2016

There are times, when a movie comes along and you think to yourself, "well this is so predictable" then your mind is blown. DON'T BREATHE is one of those movies.

The summary from IMDb reads: Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems. If you out there in internetland have seen the previews then you know that this is exactly what the previews and trailers show. You also see one of the characters die (so you already know that's going to happen), but what you don't see is the twist which caused the movie to take a really weird turn.

I thought this movie would be the same as it seemed in the previews and trailers, but I was wrong, and honestly I am not sure I liked the twist (I thought it was a little weird) but since I didn't expect it, I was happy to have it. Now, that being said, I have to say it didn't make me like the movie any more, but I did enjoy it, even if I did think it was a little over-the-top.

I felt that none of the characters were likable, and I felt that the movie was going to end with a toss up between the two evils. For one, you don't break into a blind man's house, just don't. Second you don't keep trying to find the money you broke in for when everyone keeps getting killed and there is a secret in the house that causes the blind man to be even more scary. Lastly, if you are trapped in a house and a man is trying to protect his stuff by killing everyone or maiming them and he seems to have some scary, super skills, maybe you should just walk away and forget it.

Beside the surprises towards the end of the movie, and the weird twist, most of the movie was predictable. I am not sure what I would classify this movie as since it had both horror elements and suspense/thriller elements, but I feel it is probably more in line with the horror genre. I recommend that if you are bored with most horror movies out there, go see this one, it's not the best, but it is one of the more original endings I have seen...well really one of the most original second halves to be honest.

TV Review - STRANGER THINGS

9/2/2016

Everyone kept raving about this Netflix show, so I decided to jump in and join the lemmings. When I sat and watched the first two episodes I must say I was not impressed. I thought they were slow and I didn't really care for most of the characters. I will say that things picked up, but only a little bit, and really only in the last two episodes.

There are only eight episodes in the freshman season of this new show, which isn't a lot for a television show. I know I was not the only one who wanted a little more, even with an extended final episode.

This series is not really a horror series, which many people have said, it is more science fiction than horror, even with a few scary scenes with an unnamed monster. There is a lot which is never explained, and I often find it frustrating since a freshman season of a show should not only introduce the characters but the idea behind the scenes. What was this show about? Honestly, I cannot say I am sure. It could have been about a bad place, it could have been about a bad man, it could have been about a monster, but this was never divulged. So after watching it, I will probably watch season two, but I am not as excited as many of those who I have talked to about how the first season went.

I would have liked a little more about how things had come to be, as there were some hints and some conclusions made, but nothing was really fully developed, even the reason the main female child was kept. Was she created? Was she born the way she was? There was not development in how she came to be where or who she was.

There also seemed to be an unnecessary character, the father of the missing child. He is seen in the first episode and then once towards the end but it is added drama that was not needed and his character didn't add anything to the series. Also, he alludes to the mother having an issue before, but it is never spoken about again.

I can't say that I loved this show like everyone else I have spoken with, however, it was interesting. I am looking forward to season two just to see what happens next, but I don't feel the eagerness I have felt with other shows, such as JESSICA JONES.
