Movie Review - IT FOLLOWS

From IMDb - A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after getting involved in a sexual encounter. Doesn't say much does it? This was how I felt about the movie too.

This was one of those summer movies that I really wanted to see, but never got around to. The previews looked interesting, and I love horror, but this summer just didn't lend itself to movie watching so I am catching up. I know, from reading other peoples thoughts about this movie, so many loved this movie, which made me want to love it to. Unfortunately, I didn't love it, or even like it.

Jay, a young college student, has sex with a boy she barely knows. While sitting in his car she gets a terrible surprise and wakes up tied to a chair in her underwear. Her life has been hanged forever and for this one time of unprotected sex she gets a lifetime of murderous beings following her. To be free she needs to have sex with someone else, but the question is can she? And who? And should she?

So, the premise to this movie was great. A supernatural sexually transmitted disease that kills and can only be gotten rid of through sex. However, this movie was incredibly slow with a lot of teenagers running around screaming and being chased by who really knows what. The beginning of the movie was really interesting and it started with a gruesome murder. Then things just went downhill.

There wasn't really interesting about the characters to make me care if they lived or died, and at one point Jay was just so boring I wanted her to die. She was the most uninteresting character, besides Bella Swan from the Twilight series. I just could not get engaged with her character.

My other big problem: there was never an explanation for the supernatural sexually transmitted disease. I wanted more and I wanted there to be a reason behind this, or at least a little more explanation for it. I wanted some research to be done so I wasn't going through this whole movie wondering why these kids were just dealing with this with no freaking information. Also, where were the adults? This was another horror movie where kids were just running around like they have no parents and can do whatever they want. I am so tired of that. Like really. I mean I know one of the fathers was dead, but where was the mom when her daughters went off for days and disappeared to some guys beach house? Really?

Anyway, let's just say I wasn't a fan of this movie. I wanted more from something so different and it fell flat.

Movie Review - THE GIFT

From IMDb A young married couple's lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband's past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years.

The couple Simon and Robyn move to LA to start their lives over after losing a child and troubles that Robyn went through after the death of their child. While shopping around for new furniture they run into an old high school friend of Simon's, Gordon, and eventually he is invited to dinner. There is some tension between Simon and Gordon, and Robyn asks about it. Simon refuses to answer and says that what is in the past should remain in the past.

After gifts start turning up at the house Simon becomes aggressively mean, while Robyn sympathizes with Gordon, saying he is probably just lonely. Simon takes things a step further and a confrontation occurs, which causes Robyn to have nightmares and fall back on old ways. She tries to make Simon see that things need to change and things become increasingly hostile but he refuses to see things her way and more turmoil happens in their personal and professional lives.

I thought this was a pretty good movie with and interesting twist and a thought provoking idea that made me question certain aspects of today's society. The movie is really about aggressive behavior and bullying and how not only does it affect you as children it can also bleed into your adult life. Some people never stop being bullies and sometimes those who were bullied are looking to forgive or settle old scores.

One of the main problems I had with this movie was the slowness of it. It really did take forever to get to the action and the drama in the movie. While I understood the buildup, there was at least one point where everyone was at dinner and I just questioned what the point of this movie was or where it was going. The story took so long to get interesting I almost walked out, though I am glad I didn't.

The plot of this movie was all about bullying and it was really, really good. I thought it was a great lesson in what it could be like for bullies who continue bullying and for those who are getting over the actions of others that affected them.

I would recommend this movie, if you like suspense and surprise. It's not scary or thrilling, but it is a little suspenseful and the ending was just perfect.

Updates

I know it's only September but I wanted to post an update because October is going to be a busy month for me.

First thing is I am going to be in a theatrical version of CLUE. It runs October 30, 31, and November 6, 7, 8, and 9. It will be at the Renaissance Theater in Huntsville, Alabama. I just decided to try out for fun, and it's been a while since I did anything theatrical so I tried out and got the part of the cook. Fun times because once again I get to die. I love dying, it is so much more fun to die in a film or play than it is to be a living person. I've been stabbed, shot, shot with an arrow, hung, strangled, suffocated, shot up with an overdose of drugs, and I believe once I committed Seppuku.

Second I will be selling my books at Rocket City Lit Fest October 10 and 11. I'm reading Saturday, October 10 at 11:30am, and I am part of a panel talking about the introduction of graphic novels to newbies. Hopefully I will have the third book ready to sell at Lit Fest but I'm not sure I can order them by then. If not there is another chance as I will also be participating in Rocket City NerdCon, and I will be a featured author at Lowe Mill Out Loud October 21.

Lowe Mill Out Loud starts at 6:30pm. There will be a lot of fun authors reading their short stories and their poems. I will be reading a story or two and maybe a chapter or two from one of my books.

Rocket City NerdCon is October 23-25. I will absolutely have the third book ready to sell then. I will also have some shoes and other goodies that I will be selling there. Come see me! I look forward to meeting fans and other people interested in horror and zombies!!!

ZA: ZOMBIES ANONYMOUS

From the plot summary on IMDB I thought this would be a great and fun movie to watch. Here's the plot: Angela has been shot point blank by her boyfriend and lives in a world where the living and dead co-exist. Zombie Anonymous meetings, look alive face creams and all-meat diners help them cope in this bizarre society. ZA takes you on a weird ride where life meets death - or does it?

So while this should have been fun, after watching it I wanted to cry. I really wanted to like this movie, but not only was the acting bad, the plot was silly, and the production quality was so poor. Not one scene in this movie made me like it. Not one scene made me laugh. Not one scene made me glad I had watched it. The entire movie made me wish I had taken a fork to my eyes and plucked them out of me head.

The movie had potential, the plot had potential, but they got so off base and went all over the place with an anti-zombie army and with this weird zombie-against-human army. I wasn't sure what the point was after a certain point, partly because there weren't many meetings in the movie so I wasn't sure why it was titled ZA: ZOMBIES ANONYMOUS. If it had been about the meetings and how the zombies were actually trying to fit back into society that would have been great, it would have been more like the tv show IN THE FLESH, bit it wasn't.

It had a shotgun that shot over 10 shots without reloading. It dwelt too much on the silly violence where zombies ripped the flesh from people with their teeth. It also had zombies eating zombies. It had zombies continually bleeding after they had been dead for a while. It had zombies feeling pain after they had been dead for a while. It was just ridiculous. And I can suspend my belief when it comes to zombies because, come on, zombies, but this movie asked too much. Plus, the ending was just boring and uninspired.
